The University of Michigan is a coeducational public research university. The university has about 24,800 undergraduate and 14,900 graduate students in 600 academic programs. Founded in Detroit in 1817 when Michigan was still a territory, the university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The university is one of sixty elected members of the Association of American Universities. Its mascot is the Wolverines. Michigan is a member of the Big Ten Conference.
