West Virginia University is located in Morgantown, West Virginia. The mascot is the Mountaineers. WVU's main rival is Pittsburgh. West Virginia also has smaller rivalries with Syracuse and Louisville. Historically, West Virginia's rivals have included Penn State.

- Mascot - The mascot for West Virginia is a student dressed in full body Mountaineer dress. The mascot appears at all major sporting events. The student mascot customarily grows a beard during his tenure to go along with a coonskin cap and a rifle.
- Celebrations - The student body is nationally renowned for burning couches after major victories. It has become a beloved tradition that has spawned t-shirts of burning couches and miniature couch shaped candles in homage to the act.
- After every major victory it is also customary for those in attendance to sing in unison the John Denver song "Country Roads."
