The Southern Conference is the fifth-oldest NCAA Division I conference.
It was formed in 1921, and only the Big Ten, Missouri Valley, Pacific 10, and SWAC are older. It gave birth to both the SEC and ACC.
The Southern Conference was the first conference to use the 3-point line in college basketball, and is one of the 8 automatic qualifiers in FCS Football National Championship playoffs.
