Cincinnati and Pitt are only separated by only 250 miles, the teams will play on a regular basis. Seeking to build the matchup into a lasting rivalry, the athletic directors Bob Goin of Cincinnati and Jeff Long of Pittsburgh agreed to initiate the River City Rivalry and create an appropriate trophy for the game.

Cincinnati played its inaugural Big East game vs Pittsburgh. This game is the first game in the River City Rivalry which was started in 2005. Every year the winner gets the Captain's Telegraph, which is an award composed of a riverboat telegraph and a graphic silhouette of the Ohio River.

Pittsburgh has won the first three games of the series.
