[edit] Traditions

  • The term Sooner refers to an event earlier in the history of Oklahoma. In 1889, when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory, the United States opened up 2 million acres of land for settlement by eager expansionists. These expansionists had to wait for the firing of a gun before they were able to claim their homestead. The term "Sooner" referred to those who preferred not to wait for the gun fire and snuck in prematurely. The term "Boomer" refers to those who by constant agitation tried to bring about the opening of Oklahoma to settlers before 1889.
