The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, known officially as either Milwaukee or UWM for all NCAA purposes, is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The mascot is the Panther. Milwaukee participates in the Horizon League in 15 varsity sports.

University Information

With a current enrollment of over 28,000 students, Milwaukee is one of the 50 largest D-I universities in the United States, the second largest university in the state of Wisconsin, and the largest in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. UWM also enrolls more Wisconsin residents than any other university. [1] The UWM campus, located just 5 blocks from Lake Michigan and 10 minutes from downtown Milwaukee, is nestled in a residential neighborhood on 93 acres of the city's upper-east side. UWM is currently home to approximately 23,000 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students from over 80 countries and all 50 states. UWM has undergone several transformations and mergers with other area institutions of higher learning over the course of its 122 year existence. Originally founded in 1885 as the Milwaukee State Normal School, the school expanded its curriculum in 1927 to become the Milwaukee State Teachers College. In 1951, it became Wisconsin State College-Milwaukee, and in 1956, UWM after its merger with the University of Wisconsin Extension Center in Milwaukee. With a distinguished faculty of more than 1,300, UWM is listed among the top 100 public institutions in the nation in research and development expenditures. UWM is also one of 148 U.S. colleges and universities (from a total of 3,600) ranked by the Carnegie Foundation in the top tier of Doctoral/Research Universities - Extensive. A number of UWM’s individual schools and colleges have achieved national recognition, as well as top accreditation, by their review groups. UWM has awarded over 145,000 degrees to over 135,000 graduates, 65 percent of which remain in Southeastern Wisconsin after graduation. Distinguished alumni include Golda Meir (Education '17), a founder of the State of Israel and fourth Prime Minister of Israel, the late NASCAR Winston Cup champion Alan Kulwicki (Mechanical Engineering ‘77), as well as other foreign heads of state, Milwaukee mayors, Wisconsin governors, senators and assemblymen, and many Fortune 500 business company president's and CEO's.

Since joining the Division I ranks for all sports in the 1990-1991 academic year, Milwaukee has moved itself into a prominent position both regionally and nationally in the world of intercollegiate athletics. This prominence is highlighted by numerous NCAA Tournament appearances:

  • Milwaukee retained the prized Milwaukee Cup in 2006 by defeating cross-town rival Marquette University, 3-2, in the first ever night match at UWM's Engelmann Field [6]. The estimated 95% pro-UWM crowd of 3,256 was the largest college soccer crowd in City of Milwaukee history.

  • Milwaukee won its fourth-straight Horizon League regular-season title in 2006. The last school in the league to win four-straight regular season titles was Notre Dame, which did so from 1991-1994.
  • Team finished the regular season at 24-5 and will be making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, and first since 2002.
  • Team returned four of six starters - and 10 letterwinners overall - from 2005's regular-season championship squad, led by All-Horizon League performer Cheryl Hegemann and AVCA Honorable Mention All-Region honoree Sarah Moore. [12]
