Charter Members of the Metro were: Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Memphis State, Saint Louis, and Tulane (Tulane was not involved in Men's Basketball from 1984-1989, due to a point shaving scandal but remained a member of the conference in all other sports.)
Before joining the Metro, all the schools were independents, except Louisville who was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

[edit] Birth of Conference USA
In 1995, the Metro merged with the Great Midwest Conference to form Conference USA Louisville, UNC Charlotte, Southern Mississippi, South Florida and Tulane were included.
[edit] Results of C-USA Merger
As a result of the two conferences merging to form Conference USA Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech were expelled from the Metro Conference to facilitate the merger with the Great Midwest Conference. VCU and Virginia Tech received a monetary settlement and subsequently accepted their respective invitations from the Colonial Athletic Association and Atlantic 10
note: the general consensus was that Virginia Tech could have been a charter member of Conference USA if it withdrew from the Big East Football Conference and aligned its program with Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, Southern Mississippi, and Tulane. But in the end Virginia Tech refused too, resulting in Virginia Tech and the C-USA Schools going separate ways.
