Orgins of the Jayhawk- A mythical bird, the Jayhawkers was the name given to the men in the Kansas territory that during the Civil War fought to keep Kansas a free state. Lawrence was the capital of the Free State. The Jayhawkers repelled multiple invasions from the neighboring pro slavery Missourians, led by Quantrill. Quantrill even succeeded in burning the city of Lawrence to the ground, but the Jayhawkers came back and in the end they prevailed. Following the war most Kansans were proud to be called Jayhawkers.

They also reported other violations in men's basketball, men's track & field, women's track & field, baseball, women's tennis, men's golf, rowing, and women's soccer. Their self-imposed penalties amounted to cutting one scholarship in football for two years and two scholarships in women's basketball for one year. The NCAA investigation (and prior Kansas investigation) placed the blame for these violations on employees who were no longer at Kansas University including
