Florida International University was founded in 1965 and opened for classes in 1972 with 5,667 students - the largest opening day enrollment in U.S. collegiate history. Today it has more than 38,000 students. FIU is one of the 25 largest universities in the nation, based on enrollment. FIU is Miami-Dade County’s first public, four-year university. Our powerful record of innovation and research continues to improve the quality of life in our communities.

FIU’s intercollegiate athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I. FIU is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and is a Soccer Member in Conference USA.



Rivalries:
Every year Florida International plays Florida Atlantic in the "Shula Bowl". The "Shula Bowl" named after Don Shula, former coach of the Miami Dolphins and record holder of the most NFL victories, gives bragging rights to a South Florida team.
