Florida Gulf Coast
From NCAA Wiki
Florida Gulf Coast University is located in Fort Myers, Florida. In 1991, the Florida Board of Regents decided that the state needed a 10th university, particularly serving the fast-growing Southwest Florida region. Later on that year, Governor Lawton Chiles (D) signed the legislation approving the construction of the new university. On August 25, 1997, Florida Gulf Coast University would open its doors to its first students.
Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) began playing its sports in the NAIA and soon moved to Division II. As the enrollment grew, so did the competitiveness of its sports programs. In just a few short years, many of its sports programs have received Top-25 rankings in Division II, including men's basketball and baseball. Despite its success, FGCU had problems scheduling teams as an independent. FGCU approached the Sunshine State Conference and the Gulf South Conference who both declined to offer the school an invitation to join their conferences. In the Spring of 2006, FGCU started to look at the feasibility of leaping to Division I athletics. Atlantic Sun Conference commissioner, Bill Bibb, made a visit to the FGCU campus, and his friend, FGCU Athletics Director, Carl McAloose. Bibb praised the facilities on the growing campus and was impressed by the support the school had from its students and the community. Soon after, FGCU stated that they will make the jump to Division I, which was followed by an invite to the Atlantic Sun Conference as the eleventh member. The Eagles will begin their reclassification in the 2007-2008 season.
