History

Florida football came to prominence on the national scene in the 1990's when Steve Spurrier, a former quarterback and Heisman Trophy award winner from the University, led the Gators to a string of SEC championships including four straight from 1993 to 1996 and a National Championship in 1996. Spurrier left the Gators after the 2000 season to coach the Washington Redskins in the National Football League. His replacement, Ron Zook, the former defensive coordinator, coached the team for three years. The Gators had been falling in national acclaim steadily since 2000 and hit an ultimate low in 2004 when they were upset by Mississippi State in an away game. After this game Ron Zook was fired. He remained the coach of the team for the remainder of the season and rebounded slightly to defeat one of Florida's greatest rivals, the Florida State Seminoles, in an away game during which the Seminoles were dubbing their field after their Legendary Coach, Bobby Bowden. Ron Zook was carried off of the field. Coach Urban Meyer was hired as his replacement. Meyer was coach of the Utah Utes. He had led them to a stunning undefeated season with a 35-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Fiesta Bowl. Meyer was regarded as a young but extremely talented coach. Using a spread-option offense, his trademark, he led the Gators to a 9-3 season and a victory over Iowa in the Outback Bowl. Many argue that the Spread-Option offense will not work in the SEC, the first major conference Meyer has run his offense in, because of the speed present on SEC defenses. This claim has neither been affirmed or discredited. However, late during his first season, Meyer did have to adjust the offense, removing many of the option plays present. This was because the players, and especially quarterback Chris Leak, were not adjusting to the radical change in offense quickly. After the adjustment the Gators rebounded. During the 2006 Spring Season, Meyer fully implemented his Spread-Option offense once more, and it is running to a higher degree of success. Optimism is high for the future of Florida Football, and many of the fans cannot wait to demonstrate their strong support for the program during the 2006 season.
