Eichelberger Field is home to the newest Fighting Illini sport - softball. The 1,500 seat facility opened in 2001 at a cost of $2 million. The facility features a modern scoreboard, 15 rows of permanent bleacher seating located in the infield, and bullpen facilities for each team.
The field measures 200' to the corners, and 210' to center field.
World's Largest Softball Tailgate
Entering its 3rd year in 2006, Eichelberger Field is home of the annual "World's Largest Softball Tailgate". The promotion drew 2,100 fans in 2006. The 2006 WLST will feature a rare evening game against Northwestern on Saturday, May 6.
Future Expansion
In 2005 the University of Illinois announced they had received a $1.0 million gift from Rex and Alice Martin to complete Eichelberger Field. The gift will go towards the construction of a permanent press box, restrooms, permanent concession facilities, and a team clubhouse. Once completed, the facility will be known as "Eichelberger Field at Martin Stadium". Expansion of the softball facility will likely coincide with the planned expansion of the nearby Atkins Tennis Center.
