Bio
Coming out of high school, Derrick Williams was one of the top recruits in the nation. He, along with Justin King, are often credited with turning around a struggling Penn State team. Before choosing Penn State, Williams also considered Florida, Florida State, and Oklahoma. He had a 4.31 40, 330 bench, and a 32 inch vertical leap. His commitment to Penn State created an aura of excitement among fans after 4 losing seasons in 5 years. He enrolled early and instilled his confidence in the whole team. Although his stats for his freshman year may not be impressive, his impact on the team was undeniable. He came through in the clutch many times throughout the year, but his two most memorable moments are his running touchdown vs. Ohio State, and his game winning catch vs. Northwestern. With less then a minute left at Northwestern, Michael Robinson lobbed a long ball to Williams, which he caught, faked out a defender and scored his first TD of his career. At Beaver Stadium two weeks later, Williams took a pitch outside and blew by AJ Hawk in the now famous picture.
