The CCHA started in 1971 when the head coaches of Bowling Green (Jack Vivian), Lake Superior State (Ron Mason), and St. Louis (Bill Selman) all met in Boston. A scheduling agreement was made with Bowling Green, Ohio State, Ohio, and St. Louis. In 1972, Lake Superior State joined the league.
