History
The Big East Conference was formed in 1979. Current Big East teams reside in 9 of the top 33 TV markets. The Conference Sponsors 23 sports. Charter Members are: Providence, St. John's, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College. Big East Football didn't start until 1991. Pittsburgh joined in 1983, Villanova joined in 1980. West Virginia and Rutgers were added for all sports in 1995, while Notre Dame was added for every sport except football. Connecticut Football moved to FBS level in 2004.
The current Commissioner of the Big East is Mike Tranghese. Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, DePaul and Marquette joined in 2005 as a result of ACC Expansion, these five schools were previously members of Conference USA
