The Atlantic Sun Conference was founded on September 19, 1978 as the Trans-America Athletic Conference (TAAC). It received its current name in June 2001

The conference office is currently located in Macon, Georgia. Prior to this, the office was in Athens, Georgia, from 1983 to 1992, and before that, Shreveport, Louisiana.

Bill Bibb is Commissioner, and has been since October of 1991.

In 2005, Georgia State left the conference for the Colonial Athletic Association, Central Florida left for Conference USA, and Troy left for the Sun Belt. The Atlantic Sun replaced them with East Tennessee State from the Southern Conference, and Kennesaw State and North Florida from the Peach Belt Conference (Division II). In 2006, Florida Atlantic departed for the Sun Belt Conference. Florida Gulf Coast University and University of South Carolina Upstate were accepted to the conference, joined for play in 2007-08. In 2008, Gardner-Webb left for the Big South. In 2011, Campbell will also move to the Big South.

Mercer is the only charter member still in the conference.
